Before deciding where to put a rug in the kitchen, you need to decide whether you want one or more. Interior designer Annie Burrows believes there are good reasons to go with the latter. “Rugs tend to get disproportionately expensive as they get bigger, so two smaller ones are a better choice. Plus, you can mix and match them to create different design ideas with your rug in the kitchen,” she says.

It’s also worth considering the functional placement of the rug in the kitchen – it requires regular maintenance, and the smaller the rug, the easier it is to keep it looking its best. “A small rug is easier to move around and will fit in a standard washing machine,” Annie explains. Finally, a small rug will fit anywhere, meaning you can protect the floor in high-traffic areas from wear and tear – especially important with wood and natural stone.
