Fabric fibers will suffer
Odor isn’t the only side effect of dampness: it also causes the fibers of the fabric to deteriorate. You won’t notice it right away, but an item left wet for too long will wear out faster than it should. Some materials can stretch and deform in a way that’s impossible to return to their original state if left in the machine for more than 24 hours.
